GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The community of George is encouraged to support a fundraising effort in aid of Carpe Diem School, which provides vital support and services to disabled children.
Due to Covid, Carpe Diem School for Physically Disabled Children has experienced many difficulties over the past few years. The regular fundraising activities that it relies on could not take place and its government grant does not cover all its daily expenses.
Learners are provided with a cooked meal every day as well as a food parcel to take home. George Municipality has launched a tin recycling project which will see all funds received from recycling companies for the tins being given to the school.
The municipality urges businesses, churches, hotels, restaurants, B&Bs, gyms and outdoor facilities to support the project. Please collect empty used tins, clean them and drop them off, either at the nearest area office or at the Social Services office (c/o Varing and St John streets).
Alternatively, phone the office on 044 802 2000/2001/2009 and they will arrange to collect the tins for handover to local recycling companies.
About the school
Carpe Diem provides for physically, learning- and intellectually impaired learners between the ages of six and 18 years who cannot be accommodated in mainstream education.
The school also serves a few hearing-impaired learners capable of functioning in a normal class situation with the help of hearing aids and/or FM systems (this excludes learners who are deaf).
The school also has an autistic unit that provides for learners on this spectrum.
Since February 2020 the school has accommodated deaf learners between the ages of three and eight in the unit for deaf learners.
The school serves all towns and farming communities along the Southern Cape coastal region, which include Riversdale, Albertinia, Mossel Bay, Hartenbos, Klein Brak, Groot Brak, George, Hoekwil, Sedgefield, Karatara, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and the Crags. At the moment there are 385 learners in the school with 84 of them living in the hostels.
