MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, an international campaign starts on 25 November, named International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
This awareness campaign runs until 10 December. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women's Global Leadership.
In South Africa, this campaign is better known as 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.
Abuse is considered being any form of behaviour that causes fear, bodily harm oi a person to do things against their will. Bear in mind that Parliament has passed laws to protect the rights of individuals against abuse.
They are:
- The Domestic Violence Act of 1998
- The Children's Act of 2005
- The Maintenance Act of 1998
- The Promotion of Equity and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act of 2000
- The Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters Act) Amendment Act of 2007
