MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - Today - Friday, 4 September 2020 - will be remembered forever by the Huisamen family and their friends in Mossel Bay.
It is the day Alwyn Huisamen (68) checked out of hospital after an almost three-month Covid-19 ordeal. His wife Endri and his other loved ones were at Vidamed Day and Sub Acute hospital in Mossel Bay to meet him in true celebratory style today. Alwyn had no idea he would be greeted by such a large party before he left the hospital.
Beside herself with joy and relief, Endri told the Mossel Bay Advertiser today: "This is the best present I have ever received in my life."
Alwyn is well known in Mossel Bay. He was at the Mossel Bay Municipality from 1986 to 2016 in the capacity of an electrician and later supervisor.
He currently works for VE Reticulation.
On 2 July he took a Covid-19 test and on 4 July heard the result was positive. Although he did not have a temperature and did not lose his sense of taste or smell, he had severe body pain, tiredness and diarrhoea. He coughed a lot and lost his appetite.
On 11 July he was admitted to Life Bay View Private Hospital and immediately was administered 80% oxygen. Although the oxygen was reduced, his nose bled on 26 July and that night he had to be incubated and was placed on a ventilator until 8 August.
His condition was critical and family and friends worldwide were praying for him. "By the grace of God, he tested negative for Covid-19 on 15 August and he has transferred to a normal ward in Life Bay View Hospital." Alwyn was extremely weak and was transferred to Vidamed on 25 August for rehabilitation.
Now, on 4 September, after 55 long days apart from him, his family were over the moon to be reunited with him. He last saw his family before his hospitalisation.

The family spokesperson said: "Endri, Jessica Joubert of Port Elizabeth and Maritza Holz of Swakopmund are extremely grateful, first to the Lord who spared Alwyn's life and to every person who prayed for Alwyn."
The family is also especially thankful to Life Bay View Hospital's Covid-19 staff - Dr Hurter and Dr Marais. They are extremely grateful to hospital manager Lida Swart and Christa Strauss who gave regular reports to the family on Alwyn's progress.
Alwyn's family also gives heartfelt thanks to all the Vidamed personnel, as well as Theo Pauw and Prissie Muller.
"We can testify of the seriousness of Covid-19, but also of the amazing support and love of family, friends, hospital staff, doctors and of God's amazing grace and mercy," the family spokesperson said.
