MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mufasa, the first dog to be inducted into the Mossel Bay Municipality's K9 unit, completed the first part of his training towards the end of 2022 and he has been out and about doing duty with his handler, James Gerber.
K9 units are usually in the police, but the municipality started its K9 unit towards the end of 2022.
Gerber, a member of municipal law enforcement services at the municipality, assists in the apprehension of suspects as and where needed alongside the police. Mufasa, a Belgian Malinois breed of dog, underwent his first assessment for 2023 on 10 January.
The municipality has appointed expert trainers through a tender process. The trainers were pleased after their first encounter with Mufasa and Gerber.
Following a rather rigorous assessment session, Mufasa made people smile as he cooled off in a concrete outdoor trough at the K9 quarters at the SPCA in Mossel Bay.
