Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A young learner at Garden Route Primary School was killed in an accident on the school grounds early on Thursday morning, 19 April.
For quite some time every effort has been made to have a piece of particularly dangerous land levelled so that a proper playing area may be created on the disused area.
Recently local contractors responded to requests for cooperation in this regard and started dropping sand on the terrain, which is at the back of the school and where the learners are not supposed to be.
On Thursday morning, it seems, several young boys emerged from some of the bushes on the terrain.
Unbeknown to the driver of the tipper-truck, they apparently hung on the side of the vehicle. It seems one of the boys, a Grade 5 pupil, 11-year-old Mivuyo Homane, lost his grip and he fell under the wheels of the truck.
Garden Route Primary principal, Nicolas Gertse, called for emergency personnel and for school psychiatrists to assist the learners, teachers and family directly after the tragedy.
Mivuyo will be laid to rest on Saturday, 28 April at Nqcobo in the Eastern Cape.
KwaNonqaba police investigating officer Sgt Dominique Deuster was one of the first to arrive on the scene at Garden Route Primary School on Thursday morning.
The boy's mother, a single parent, and elders have met the school's governing body and have agreed to a memorial service for the young learner to take place on Wednesday, 25 April at 11:00 at the school.
Because the burial will take place at Nqcobo, the community is asked to contribute to the funeral costs.
Anyone who would like to make a contribution is welcome to contact Garden Route Primary (044 693 9092) for more information.
