MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - A young learner at Garden Route Primary School was killed in an accident on the school grounds early this morning, Thursday 19 April.
For quite some time, every effort has been made to get a piece of particularly dangerous land levelled so that a proper playing area may be created on the disused area.
Recently local contractors responded to requests for cooperation in this regard and started dropping sand on the terrain, which is at the back of the school and where the learners are not supposed to be.
This morning, it seems, several young boys emerged from some of the bushes on the terrain. Unbeknown to the driver of the tipper-truck, they apparently hung on the side of the vehicle.
It seems one of the boys, said to be 12 years old, may have lost his grip and he fell under the wheels of the truck.
The principal, Nicolas Gertse, appeared to be in a state of shock when the Mossel Bay Advertiser visited the school directly after the incident.
He has arranged for school psychiatrists to assist the learners. The boy's parents were notified.
The name of the victim is known but cannot be disclosed until the next of kin have been notified.
