MOSSEL BAY NEWS - April is World Autism Month and World Autism Day was on 2 April.
Last year, shortly after their election in March, the Mossel Bay junior town council (JTC) members embarked on an autism awareness campaign. Following a needs assessment, the JTC focused its efforts on raising money and much-needed food for Leolan Academy, a facility for children with special needs in Mossel Bay.
The JTC's efforts included selling blue ribbons at the junior councillor's respective schools to raise more than R7 000 for Leolan.
The JTC partnered with the Mossel Bay Advertiser's Oliver Twist Community Project in 2021, and will do so again this year.
This year, this JTC-driven initiative calls on the community to donate non-perishables to Leolan. This includes two-minute noodles, oats, pasta, sugar, flour, mealie meal and rice.
Donations can be dropped off at the offices of the Mossel Bay Advertiser, 9 Church Street, Monday to Thursday from 08:00 to 16:00 and Fridays from 08:00 to 13:00. Donations will be received until Wednesday, 18 May.
This, according to the JTC executive, will be an annual project.
"Our aim is to create greater awareness among the youth of worthy causes in the community and to mobilise the youth to address them," says junior mayor, Ethan-John Carstens.
