MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - With the significant increase in illegal dumping and the numerous complaints received from the community of Great Brak River, an interactive recycling educational and awareness campaign, called School up on Waste, took place on 13 April at Great Brak Primary School.
The event was coordinated by Mossel Bay Municipality's Waste Management and Pollution Control Department in collaboration with the Community Development Department.
This platform was created for the pupils of Great Brak Primary School to take the responsibility and ownership of keeping their environment and surroundings clean.
DG Rhoode, the school principal, expressed the importance of recycling and a no littering policy to the learners during the opening of the event.
Role players including Nestle South Africa, Henque Waste, Child Welfare South Africa, the Department of Fishing, Forestry and the Environment and Don't Waste were welcomed to the event.
These stakeholders had an important part to play in educating the learners in the field of waste reuse and recycling.

The learners were entertained by an interactive puppet show coordinated by Child Welfare South Africa. Gertjie Glas, Peter Papier and Betsie Blikkie explained why it is bad for the environment and human health to dump and litter and why it is important that we recycle and reuse waste at home and at school.
The learners were tasked with sorting the different waste into the appropriate waste recycling containers. Various sponsored prizes were up for grabs.
Henque Waste presented an informative video that illustrated the importance of recycling in efforts to preserve the environment for future generations.
The presentation was followed by a question and answer and recyclable waste treasure hunt session, where more prizes were up for grabs for the correct answers.
The Waste Management and Pollution Control Department is planning to roll out this project to various schools in need of such pollution-related education.
