MOSSEL BAY NEWS - After only six short weeks in which to prepare a new programme of music, local orchestra Carpe Musicam! has pulled off another coup by performing two excellent concerts with a Viennese theme.
Strauss waltzes and polkas are tricky to perform well, but the community-based orchestra injected a definite sense of life and joy into these famous tunes.
Most notable was the Fledermaus Overture, performed almost flawlessly. There were also slightly less traditional items, such as The Third Man Theme and the theme from Mission Impossible – both with strong Viennese connections.
CM!'s dedication to exposing young people to orchestral music is always encouraging. As usual members of the CM! Youth Wind Group – from eight to 15 years - joined the orchestra for selected items including Mission Impossible and handled its complicated 5/4 rhythms and harmonies with aplomb.

Audience reaction was extremely positive, with many interviewees stating that CM! was an under-appreciated jewel of culture in the Garden Route which should have as wide a following as possible.
