MOSSEL BAY ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - The 2020 Dias Festival promises another first for Mossel Bay – Gqom music is coming to town.
Apart from an exciting line-up of big name musicians, the renowned Gqom music duo, Distruction Boyz, all the way from Durban, will be on stage on Friday evening, 31 January.
Recording artists and record producers Thobani "Que" Mgobhozi and Zipho "Goldmax" Mthembu's debut album Gqom is the Future was certified gold by RISA, making it the first Gqom album to ever achieve this status.
'Gqom'
Gqom (Igqomu) is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in the early 2010s in Durban. The word gqom derives from an onomatopoeic combination of click consonants in the isiZulu and isiXhosa meaning a hitting drum. It is also expressed as qgom, igqom, gqomu or variants thereof.
Gqom is known for its beats which have a minimal, raw and repetitive sound with heavy bass. It is mainly described as having a dark and hypnotic club sound. The style of beats does not use the four-on-the-flour rhythm pattern which is often heard in other house music.
Gqom was developed by a young generation of technologically skilled DJs with DistructionBoyz a favourite.
Gqom music is associated with a number of distinctive dance moves, including gwara gwara, vosho and bhenga.
No Early B
Sad news for the fans, however, is that the spot reserved for popular Early B will instead be taken by YoungstaCPT.
Riyadh Roberts, Born December 22, 1991, is professionally known as YoungstaCPT. He is a South African Rapper & Songwriter who wrote and recorded his first song at age 12, and since then has released more than 30 mixed CDs and numerous EPs. Some of his influences are 2Pac, Notorious BIG, Dead Prez and Common.
Remember, entrance to the Dias Festival and all stage programmes at the Santos Festival arena are free of charge.
Food stalls will offer snacks and treats for sale and the popular beer tent will serve drinks at a fee – however, not to anyone under 18. Where necessary, patrons will be asked to produce their ID as proof of age.
