RUGBY NEWS - Knysna United earned a tough, one-point victory away to Prince Albert last weekend while Sedgefield Eagle Stars and Jaguars suffered losses against Heidelberg and Groot Brak respectively.
All of the rugby clubs were returning to action last weekend after a mid-season break the week before, and were eager to get the second round of fixtures in their leagues off to a positive start.
Eagle Stars had the toughest fixture of the three, with second-placed Heidelberg lying in wait for them in SWD Super League A, while Jaguars had to face Groot Brak, and Knysna United were lined up against Prince Albert in the SWD Super League B.
All of the games were to be played on Saturday 25 June, and only Jaguars played at home. They welcomed the three Groot Brak teams to the Bitou Rugby Fields in Plettenberg Bay and the clubs' third teams kicked off first. The visitors emerged 25-3 victors.
Next up were the second teams and Groot Brak were victorious once more, this time with a 27-5 result. The first team match was Jaguars' best result of the day but still not a desirable one, as Groot Brak won the encounter 38-19.
In Heidelberg, it turned out to be a very tough day for Eagle Stars, the men from Sedgefield. In the third team game the home side won 54-3, the smallest margin for the day.
The second teams came next and Eagle Stars managed to stop Heidelberg from reaching 100 points but the result still read 99-3 to the home team. The first team match wasn't much different as Heidelberg won this encounter 98-7.
The only other hope for a local rugby club to earn a win last weekend was Knysna United, who travelled to face a resilient opponent in the form of Prince Albert who are looking to ascend up the table in SWD Super League B.
With no third teams in this league, the second teams got the day going and the home team were the victors here, winning 19-10.
This would however be their only success of the day as Knysna United battled tooth and nail to grind out a 25-24 victory in the first-team game, keeping them top of the log in the league.
