For the first time, PetroSA had the opportunity to host this event in Mossel Bay on Saturday, 29 October at the Van Riebeeck Stadium.
During 2010 PetroSA Refinery won the Overall Winners trophy and in 2009 it was won by PetroSA Head Office. Unfortunately, the PetroSA Head Office soccer team narrowly lost the finals' match, on penalties, to the Chevron team, giving away the Oil Baron’s title to a rival company.
The Mossel Bay team, this year's the defending champions, was eliminated at the quarter-finals stage, shifting any hope of keeping the trophy at PetroSA to the Head Office team. The team played very well throughout the tournament, including the final match.
Unfortunately the team lost 4-3 on penalties.
The third place went to the Engen Depot.
The PetroSA ladies' soccer team consoled the gents' team somewhat by winning the ladies cup against SAPREF by 7 to 6 on penalties. Next year’s Oil Baron’s Soccer Tournament will hosted by Engen in Cape Town.
Russel Mamabolo, Regional Corporate Affairs Manager at PetroSA, says the Oil Baron’s Soccer Tournament creates a good platform for networking with stakeholders. The tournament assists in cementing relations with colleagues in the petroleum sector through sport.
