MOSSEL BAY NEWS -  Local conservationist Fred Orban has called for motorists to slow down their speed and watch out for wildlife after he rescued a female duiker from the roadside of Louis Fourie Road near Dana Bay on Wednesday 23 September.

Orban, who is also the owner of Sandpiper Cottages in Boggomsbaai, said he had received a call from a client on Wednesday morning, notifying him of a duiker that had been hit by a car and was lying on the side of the road.

Without knowing the exact location of the injured antelope, Orban drove along Louis Fourie Road and began searching the grassy verges next to the road until he spotted the duiker lying in the grass near the Dana Bay turn-off.

Orban said two young men helped him get the antelope into his car and he rushed to the Mossel Bay Animal Hospital, where he handed the duiker over to veterinarian Dr Johan Barkhuizen.

Barkhuizen said the duiker appeared to have a spinal injury and she was being assessed and treated.
In the wake of the incident, Orban has appealed to the public to drive cautiously, especially next to grassy areas where wildlife may live. 

He also urged the public to send pin locations when reporting injured wildlife to make it easier and quicker for rescuers to find the animal.

As of today, 24 September, it is not known what the condition of the duiker is.
