TOURISM NEWS - South Africa’s tourism sector continues to show strong growth, with more than one million international tourists visiting the country in August.
The latest figures represent a 7.4% increase compared with August 2025, while international tourist arrivals for the first eight months of the year have now surpassed 7.5 million.
Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said the figures demonstrate continued international demand for South Africa, but added that the focus should now be on converting rising visitor numbers into greater economic opportunities.
“Welcoming more than one million international tourists in August demonstrates the demand that exists for South Africa.”
De Lille said the next step is to ensure that visitors have more reasons to explore the country, stay longer and spend more, while ensuring that tourism benefits reach communities across South Africa.
US remains South Africa's biggest overseas market
The United States remained South Africa’s largest overseas source market in August, contributing 37 134 tourists.
The United Kingdom followed with 25 749 visitors, while Germany accounted for 14 731 arrivals.
The latest figures build on what the Department of Tourism described as a resilient performance during the first half of 2026.
According to UN Tourism, South Africa recorded 12% growth in international tourist arrivals during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, making it the strongest-performing African destination during that period among those reporting data.
South Africa was also ranked among the top 20 best-performing destinations globally among countries that had reported their first-half 2026 figures.
Turning tourism growth into opportunities
The continued increase in visitor numbers comes as government and tourism stakeholders look at ways to expand the country's tourism offering.
The South African Tourism Infrastructure Investment Summit, taking place this week, is bringing together investors and tourism industry stakeholders to discuss opportunities for developing and expanding tourism products, experiences and infrastructure.
The aim is to ensure that rising demand translates into increased investment, job creation and economic opportunities.
For visitors, that could mean more destinations to explore, a wider range of experiences and more reasons to extend their stays, while for communities, the growth of tourism has the potential to create new opportunities beyond the country's traditional tourism hotspots.
