MOSSEL BAY SPORT NEWS - The Mossel Bay Surf Lifesaving Club (MBSLC) won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the surf events in the DHL SA Lifesaving Championships from 4 to 9 October in Gqeberha.
The championships were held at King's Beach.
Five junior lifesavers and 10 nippers from MBSLC not only proved their mettle in gale force winds and treacherous sea conditions, but also in the Olympic-size pool, against 1 700 competitors from 40 of the top life-saving clubs in South Africa. There were more than 500 events.
The small team of MBSLC athletes showed great determination and courage, taking on the elements. The U13 Beach Runs for both boys and girls were cancelled due to the tide washing over the sprint arena.
Excellent sportsmanship was shown by the Durban and Plettenberg Bay clubs, whose members joined MBSLC to make it possible for the juniors to enter the team events.
A big thank you goes to the Fish Hoek club for assisting MBSLC with the surf ski.
"We also acknowledge Leo Fraser, in the lifeguard team working at the championships, who took care of our youngsters when they entered the ocean," an MBSLC spokesperson said.
"We are excited to report that MBSLC also took part in the pool events for the first time and gained not only valuable experience for the future but also showed great technical ability in this debut.
"Well done to everyone involved with the event. You made Mossel Bay and MBSLC proud."
