MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The 2018 hockey club league has reached the play-off stage of the competition.
The set-up is somewhat different from previous years, when all the teams played each other twice.
Results of those matches would determine positions for quarter- and semi-finals, however this year there are play-offs after the first round.
The Mossel Bay men played against the young men from Glenwood House - an invitational team. Glenwood is strong competition and ranks in the top six and often enjoys top three status in the league.
Glenwood's frequency of games outweighs the Mossel Bay men's by far. However, the Mossel Bay men are organised and willing to put their bodies on the line to cement a spot in the league. A calculated effort by Glenwood in the first half resulted in a flurry of goals. Mossel Bay never take anything lying down and recovered well and absorbed the challenge.
During the match, most welcome rain continued to fall in winter conditions resembling base camp on Everest. These conditions were harnessed well by the more experienced Mossel Bay side, who structured a retaliation in a great second half. Although some players required windscreen wipers for their spectacles, they remained focused, moving the ball, rolling passes and defending at all cost.
Mossel Bay once again provided a clear message that they are a team growing in stature and popularity, because of teamwork, enthusiasm and discipline.
Once again the scoreboard was not a true reflection of the dedicated effort by the men. Well done to both teams and the umpires for a Glenwood victory, 4-1.
