GREAT BRAK RIVER NEWS - In 2017, Nigel Crowley, with the support of the Great Brak Community Policing Forum, started a Junior World Cup Soccer Tournament for local youths during the June and July school holidays.
Using the same concept as the legendary Great Brak River Senior World Cup Soccer Tournament, which was launched almost 30 years ago, learners 17 years and younger from Great Brak River and surrounding areas get involved by joining various "international" teams.
"Each soccer team has a specific country as theme and players live in the same streets or area," says Nigel.
The 2018 tournament will take place at the Greenhaven Sport Field from 10 to 15 July and parents, family, friends and community members are invited to attend for free to support the various teams. The first match every day will start at 12:00, with four matches played each day - 30 minutes per half and five minutes rest during halftime.
The draw will take place at the Miss Junior World Cup Soccer Function on Friday, 6 July. On Tuesday, 10 July the opening ceremony will start at Bolton Footwear, where teams will gather to walk to Greenhaven Sport Field accompanied by Miss Junior Soccer World Cup, the Boys Brigade Brass Band, "Oom Red se donkiekar", municipal traffic officers and Great Brak River SAPS.
Trophies, medals and team photographs will be handed over to the participating teams on 14 July directly after the final match.
This is one of several annual projects undertaken by the Great Brak River Community Policing Forum. For more information, contact Johann Muller (072 628 7966) or Nigel Crowley (082 820 7810).
