SPORT NEWS - Under a new name and sponsorship, the George Madibaz Forest Run, scheduled for 9 September, is poised to transform into a premier event on the Garden Route's road running calendar.
Previously known as the George Madibaz Half Marathon, this annual race has been rebranded to highlight the picturesque terrain and distinctive woodland character.
In a significant boost to its profile, the event has joined forces with Discovery Vitality, becoming an integral part of the national Vitality Run Series, dedicated to enhancing people's well-being through physical activity.
Siphesihle Jobo, the NMU George Campus sport manager, envisions growing the event to include more than a thousand participants in future. With support from the region's top runners throughout the years, its newfound status is expected to attract even greater interest from other regions.
Jobo expressed the desire to engage more competitive runners and encourage individuals to make the journey to the Garden Route. Last year's half marathon title was claimed by multiple Spar Knysna Forest Marathon champion Lloyd Bosman.
While the half marathon route remains unchanged, starting and finishing at the rugby stadium on the NMU George campus, a new 10km addition accompanies the traditional 5km and 21,1km options for the 2023 version.
The collaboration with Vitality has also led to increased prize money across all categories.
Off-course, attendees can enjoy a food court, coffee kiosks and various activities in a vibrant atmosphere.
Jobo invites the local community to participate, saying that even those who are not avid runners can try their hand at the 5km race. The event kicks off at 08:00. Visit www.aswd.co.za.
