TUINROETE | KAROO NUUS - Nothing heightens the senses like winter in the Klein Karoo.
The inaugural Eagle Falls Kammanassie Trail Run takes place in June this year and has the potential to become one of the area's most popular winter running events.
Ten kilometres north of Uniondale and 2km from De Rust in the Klein Karoo, between the Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains, lies the magnificent Kammanassie mountain, and within this valley lies Eagle Falls Country Lodge – the home of this three-day trail run.
Let your feet follow the route where streams and rivers flow in deep narrow kloofs, and the flora includes fynbos, waboomveld, arid fynbos, kloof shrubland and afro-montane forest.
No fewer than 66 bird species make the reserve their home, including sugarbirds and raptors like the black eagle, and you might be lucky enough to run into a Cape mountain zebra and small antelope.
The trail run consists of three days of running from Friday to Sunday, 16 to 18 June. Runners are however required to be at Eagle Falls Country Lodge on the day before (Thursday 15 June) for registration at 17:00, dinner and the welcoming.
On both the first and second days athletes can look forward to a breathtaking 20km, snaking through the Kammanassie valley over mountains and through fynbos. This is bound to capture your soul and treat you to peace and tranquillity. The clean air, rustling river, magnificent mountains and beautiful sunsets will play with your senses and leave nature's footprints in your memory.
On the third and final day a short 10km after breakfast will have you nice and hungry at lunch time. The prize-giving takes place at 11:00 on Sunday 18 June.
The entry fee includes all meals from Thursday afternoon until Sunday lunch and different accommodation options are on offer at Eagle Falls Country Lodge, where the roaring waters of the Molen River and the majestic flight of the black eagle converge.
The lodge offers self-catering chalets, family cabins and camping to look forward to after a morning run in the mountain. Entries are now open, so make sure you book your spot.
