MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - South Africa's premier annual endurance walk event, the Dias Vasbyt started today, Thursday 22 February from the Dias Beach parking lot in Mossel Bay.
The race attracts 500 athletes from across the country.
There was an air of urgency, excitement and expectancy at Dias as the athletes started the race in cool, overcast weather.
The athletes crossed over the busy Louis Fourie Road, with traffic officials stopping rush hour traffic.
The walkers complete 75km over two days, Thursday and Friday, 22 and 23 February.
The route encompasses D'Almeida, KwaNonqaba, walking between First and Second beaches in Dana Bay, Heiderand and Upper Town.
Athletes compete in teams of six and all team members must finish at the same time.
The forecast for Mossel Bay today, 22 February, is a high of 21C and it is expected to be partly cloudy, so the weather is being kind to the walkers.
The local Mossel Bay teams participating in the Dias Vasbyt are:
- Baby Tjoklits
- Milkwood Primary School
- Masshire
- Nestle
- Curro Private School
