MOSSEL BAY GOLF NEWS - A non-governmental organisation in Mossel Bay raised a whopping R180 000 for children with medical needs on one golf day, held on 23 December.
World-renowned golfer Louis Oosthuizen - of Mossel Bay - participated in the event, held at the Mossel Bay Golf Club.
The NGO, Golf for Good, began in 2012. December's golf day was the eighth annual golf day held since the start of the NGO.
Oosthuizen played, together with Springbok rugby player Schalk Brits, Protea cricketer AB de Villiers, European Tour professional golfer Christiaan Bezuidenhout, former Springbok rugby captain Jean de Villiers and Cheetahs rugby player Ruan Pienaar. Pienaar's father, Gysie, was also at the golf day. Gysie is a former Springbok.
Rounding off the list of sport celebrities were ex-Sharks and ex-Springbok scrumhalf Charl McLeod and Meyer Bosman, the ex-Cheetah, ex-Sharks and ex-Springbok centre. Meyer is a Mossel Bay resident.
The playing fees and the auction proceeds are what brought in the princely sum of R180 000.
Memorabilia from the sports celebrities present was auctioned, as well as photographs printed on canvas and signed by the sporting greats.
The golfers provided old flags from major tournaments for auctioning as well.
There was even original memorabilia from golfing great Rory McIllroy on auction.
Mossel Bay Golf Club captain Michal Rehr said: "All the money raised goes to children with medical needs. Three people started the charity – myself, Wynand Stander and Stephen le Roux. We are all locals. Stephen from Stephen le Roux attorneys controls all the beneficiary payments; everything gets audited every year. We have an NPO number."
For information on how to support this cause, call Stephen le Roux attorneys (044 6912 460) or Michal (072 447 6435).
Each year Mossel Bay Volkswagen gives a car as a hole-in-one prize for the golf day. This year it was a Polo GTI, but there was no hole in one. In 2015 a brand-new Passat was won.
Entertainment on the evening of the golf day was provided by Pietman (from Stoepsit on kykNET).
Michal thanks everyone including the sponsors who supported the golf day.
