MOSSEL BAY GOLF NEWS - Mossel Bay's Simoné Ferreira (15) won the Riversdale 2021 Women's Open on Saturday, 6 March.
Simoné, who is a member of Pinnacle Point Golf Club and Mossel Bay Golf Club, is vying for top spot among the Southern Cape Golf Union open women.
After the tournament on Saturday in Riversdale, she is in second place in the union's order of merit.
Coming first is Sylken-Leigh November (Kingswood Golf Estate), with 1096,2500. Simoné has 867,5000 points. It is worth noting that Sylken-Leigh's points total is after playing in 11 tournaments, whereas Simoné is coming second after having played in only eight tournaments.
Another Mossel Bay woman to watch is Lize-Mari Prinsloo (Mossel Bay Golf Club), in 10th place in the order of merit, with 237,5000 points.
Besides Simoné's young age, what made the victory on Saturday even more remarkable at the Riversdale Golf Club, was that she played with a knee injury and admits she "lost focus from the 13th to the 16th hole because of the pain".
Simoné, a second year member of the Louis Oosthuizen 57 Golf Academy, shot a 76 and came in three shots ahead of her nearest competitor.
Simoné told the Mossel Bay Advertiser: "I began well. I did not expect to win, but anything is possible. I feel I played well. Although I lost focus because I had pain, I focused well at the end."
The open was played under a sunny sky, but the wind came up during the second nine holes, challenging Simoné.
Because of the knee injury, Simoné opted not to play in the Riversdale Junior Open, which was held on Sunday, 7 March.
