FOOTBALL NEWS - Last season's Safa Eden Regional Men's League champions, Oriented Birds, failed to advance to the next round of the Nedbank Cup competition when they lost against Young Bafana in a penalty shootout last weekend.
They went down 0(3)-0(1) against Young Bafana in an entertaining Safa Western Cape ABC Motsepe Nedbank Cup knockout competition on Saturday afternoon, 7 October at Young Bafana Sport Arena in Strand, Cape Town.
The 17 Safa Western Cape Provincial teams participating in this year's provincial Nedbank Cup preliminary round were FN Rangers, Junction Rovers, Royal Blues, Ikapa Sporting, Santos, Ubuntu, Hanover Park, Ukhanya, Young Bafana, Grassy Park United, City Kings, Oriented Birds, Hout Bay United, Maties, Battalions, Zizwe United and Clarewood JMP.
The match started with the Plett side being the more dangerous team, and the Young Bafana playing their usual defensive game.
With the first half ending scoreless, both teams had something to prove in the second half, but they were pretty equally matched and no goal was scored.
The game had to be decided by penalty shootout where Young Bafana scored three against Oriented Birds' one, ensuring their advance to the next round of the Safa Western Cape Provincial Nedbank Cup Competition.
