FOOTBALL NEWS - Beaufort West Secondary School (BWest) from the Central Karoo district took home the Western Cape Kay Motsepe u.19 Schools Cup after defeating Lückhoff High (Cape Winelands) 2-0 in the final on Thursday 6 October at the Extension 23 sports field in Mossel Bay.
The Beaufort West boys showed they were hungry for the first prize and scored their two goals in the first half.
They were playing long ball and keeping the pressure on their opponents. The Stellenbosch team tried to come back into the game but the Beaufort West boys were very solid at the back, denying Lückhoff High any chances.
Beaufort West and Lückhoff High were the group winners. The high schools won R100 000 each and automatically qualified for the National Kay Motsepe u.19 Schools Cup finals, which will take place in Durban during the December holidays.
The local school, Jonga High from Thembalethu, did not qualify, falling short in points in their group.
Their bumpy ride ended when they went down 2-0 against Lückhoff High. The colourful Portland High from the Cape Town Region were favoured to win, looking very strong on the books with experienced learners who are already playing football in the bigger leagues, such as Liam April who plays for the Stellenbosch Dstv Diski Challenge Team.
The Western Cape Mamelodi Sundowns talent scout, Thembela "Thera" Maliwa, also attended to look for the best players who could be called up for the club.
