MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Sussex Cricket Club of Mossel Bay concluded an exceptionally successful season by securing multiple awards at the prestigious South Western Districts (SWD) Cricket annual awards ceremony,
This event, held at the Wilderness Hotel on Saturday, 1 June, is a highlight in the regional cricket calendar.
Key achievements and awards won by Sussex Cricket Club:
- The men’s A team received the trophy as the winner of the Promotion League, securing its promotion to the Premier League. This highlights its remarkable performance and dominance throughout the season.
- The women’s team was crowned the Division 2 winner, earning promotion to Division 1. Its outstanding performances and consistent victories set a new standard for excellence in women's cricket.
- Elzaan Pietersen, captain and coach, was honoured as the Division 2 Women’s Player of the Season. Her exceptional skills and consistent performances have been instrumental in the team’s success.
Highest results
- Fair Play Awards: Both the women’s team and men’s A Team received Fair Play Awards for achieving the highest results in the fair play assessments. "These awards underscore the club’s commitment to sportsmanship and ethical conduct on the field," a Sussex Club spokesperson said.
- Administrative Award for Operational Excellence: Sussex Cricket Club was recognised for its adherence to governance requirements and exceptional administrative performance.
"The awards ceremony was a memorable event, attended by prominent figures in the cricketing world, sponsors and enthusiastic fans," the spokesperson for Sussex noted.
'Recognition sets benchmark'
"The recognition received by Sussex Cricket Club sets a benchmark for other clubs in the region. The impressive haul of awards at the SWD Annual Award Ceremony is a testament to its members' hard work, talent, and unwavering dedication to the sport," he said.
- Special Merit Award honouring the late Sydney "Ou Boetie" Fiellies. This was a poignant moment at the awards ceremony. In a heartfelt tribute, Mr Fiellies was posthumously added to the Roll of Honour of SWD Cricket, recognising his invaluable contributions and lasting legacy within the cricketing community.
'Unwavering passion'
"Mr Fiellies dedicated his life to the sport, profoundly impacting the development and growth of cricket in the region. His unwavering passion, leadership, and commitment to fostering young talent have left an indelible mark on the cricketing landscape.
"As an honorary life president, his influence extended far beyond the pitch, shaping the very fabric of the club and SWD Cricket with his vision and dedication," the Sussex Club spokesperson said.
"During the ceremony, speakers reminisced about his numerous contributions, including his efforts to promote inclusivity, his mentorship of countless players, and his pivotal role in the administrative excellence of Sussex CC."
