MOSSEL BAY ATHLETICS NEWS - Seven athletes from the Eden District are included in the national team to participate in the Laser Run World Championships in Ireland.
More than 500 participants from all over the world will be representing more than 50 countries in the event, which will be held from 28 to 30 September. Each athlete is personally responsible for their own tour cost and the athletes of Eden MPA are very thankful to George Municipality and Eden District Council which made sponsorship available to four laser run athletes from George and three from Mossel Bay to participate at the championships.
Laser run is a relatively new concept launched by UIPM (International Modern Pentathlon Federation) in 2015 as part of their International competition calendar. It is a sub sport of the Modern Pentathlon and although a world class sport, not an Olympic one.
Participants will start with a short sprint to the shooting range.
From there, using a laser pistol, they shoot their designated target until they register five successful hits, or for 50 seconds, whichever comes first. They will then leave the range and run a 400/800m circuit, returning to the shooting range for round two of the shoot.
They complete this circuit four times, alternating between running and shooting.
Sponsorship for Neytwin Laminie (last year's silver medallist at the Laser Run World Champs) is still needed.
Eden MPA's new season starts in November 2018 and anyone interested in joining this fast growing sport can contact chair Ulene Visser (edenmpa.chairman@gmail.com).
