In a statement on Wednesday, SARS spokesperson Sandile Memela said a Tanzanian man was arrested when he arrived in South Africa from Dar Es Salaam.
The suspect was carrying two pieces of luggage and an inspection “unveiled seven transparent bags containing a crystal substance that turned out to be Ephedrine, weighing 26kg with a street value of R8,1 million”.
He was handed over to police and arrested.
In the second incident, a sniffer dog “identified a consignment of abalone worth R2 million at the OR Tambo International Airport”.
Memela said the dry abalone had been hidden in plastic wrapping and weighed 577kgs.
