He was being driven to court, when his driver was trapped at about 6am, doing 187 kilometres per hour in an 120km/h zone.
The Free State traffic department tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver reportedly did not comply.
Officials finally stopped Malema’s driver at Ventersburg, at which point Malema showed his driver’s licence and drove himself to the court.
His driver was taken back to Parys, where a case was opened against him.
According to national media, the driver will face charges of speeding and for failing to stop the vehicle when flagged down by law enforcement.
