Residents have been advised not to water their gardens, refill swimming pools or wash cars during daylight.
Johannesburg’s 4,4 million citizens primarily rely on water from the Vaal, Sterkfontein and Grootdraai dams.
With the use of water coming into sharp focus during the current heatwave, Wits University professor and renowned water expert Mike Muller says residents must be more careful.
“They need to slow down water consumption otherwise [taps] will go dry as they already are in south of Johannesburg.”
