NATIONAL NEWS - An early morning armed robbery, at one of the country’s top private schools in the Midlands, was foiled when the robbery victim managed to alert the school’s security guards.
One of the robbers was slightly wounded during an exchange of gunfire with Ballid Security and the SAPS, while the remainder of the gang was arrested on scene at Michaelhouse in Balgowan on Monday morning.
It is believed that the men had somehow jumped over the school’s electric fence and entered one of the resident’s homes, where they held him at gunpoint.
Ballid Security’s Riaan Claassen said: “Personal belongings, cameras and other equipment as well as a lot of liquor, was taken. The occupants managed to alert school security during the invasion and two were arrested on the property.
Another two ran off but were arrested in their getaway vehicle on the R103, while a fifth was arrested later in the afternoon, also on the R103.” A sixth man is apparently still at large in the area.
The gang, he added, “was probably after electronic equipment”.
Murray Witherspoon, director of marketing at Michaelhouse, confirmed the break in.
“We are very grateful that no one, except one of the robbers, was injured. We are so impressed with Ballid Security and their response, and very happy to be associated with them.
The men are being held in custody at the Nottingham Road Police Station and are expected to appear in court this week.
