Marikana residents unmoved by eviction threat
NATIONAL NEWS - Hundreds of residents from the Marikana informal settlement in Philippi are gathered outside the Western Cape High Court ahead of an application relating to their eviction from privately-owned land.

Scores of people have illegally occupied the private industrial property over the years.

Earlier this year the Wynberg Regional Court ruled residents could remain on the land after a prolonged legal battle.

The land’s owners have now turned to the High Court seeking an eviction order and an interdict preventing further occupation.

But Marikana community leader Joseph Makeleni has said they won’t go.
