NATIONAL NEWS - As we note a 5% increase in the average proportion of positive cases at the beginning of May, the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape calls on those who are 60-years of age and older to register for vaccinations. We extend the call to those who are able to assist the elderly in their communities, and to do so responsibly.
MPP Wendy Philander comments: “In less than 1 week, on 17 May, we are expected to kick start Phase 2 of the vaccination programme, which first targets individuals 60 years of age and older.
The Standing Committee on Health at the provincial parliament will embark on an oversight visit to a vaccination site, to experience the system-readiness to roll-out the next phase, first-hand, on behalf residents in the province.
Under phase 2, 195 121 people have been registered at 12 May 2021, whilst at this stage the vaccination target for the entire phase 2 stands at 2.3 million residents.
The rate at which we vaccinate and therefore a smooth operation of the system is key to delaying, as well as limiting, the intensity of a 3rd wave along with the primary goal of achieving population immunity.
We call on family members, neighbours and community members and organisations to assist residents 60 years and older to register to vaccinate. Let us all join in Premier Winde’s #letsdothis campaign and register as many people as possible ensuring that we all do our part in saving lives.
During a debate in parliament last week, the provincial Minster of Health, Nomafrench Mbombo stated that the conclusion of Phase 1 for healthcare workers (132 000) and the start of Phase 2 would occur concurrently as vaccines arrive in the province. It is thus important that we ensure our system can maintain a smooth throughput of vaccines.”
As the DA in the Western Cape we further call on residents to continue practicing the 3 Cs to prevent contracting Covid-19 and to not allow Covid-19 fatigue to set in. These measures, too, will greatly assist in reducing the severity of the 3rd wave.
