NATIONAL NEWS - The DA in the Western Cape commends the efforts of fire fighters in the Garden Route District Municipality. Fires have destroyed approximately 21 structures, 26 structures have sustained damaged. We are saddened by the loss of the Old Toll House, 3700 ha of plantations and particularly the loss of lives and those who have been displaced.
"I will be writing to the minister of Local Government and Agriculture to inquire on what and which form of provincial government assistance will be given to local communities and farmers where more than 92 000 ha was destroyed."
The reasons behind the rise in recent blazes across the district is not yet known, yet weather conditions have hampered attempts to extinguish fires and resources have been seriously tied up due the multiple blazes in the district.
The state of fires led to the urgent establishment of special units, their swift efforts and assistance are greatly appreciated. Trauma counselling by the Department of Social Development and efforts from the Education Department in accommodating affected learners are tasks of a commendable nature.
"Communities affected in the Garden Route with every natural challenge faces, have proven to be resilient in the face of urgent circumstances. I have no doubt that communities of the GRDM will rise like a phoenix from the ashes of this disaster."
The DA in WC commends the response of all fire fighters, and special units and volunteering organisations who have worked tirelessly control fires and who are providing ongoing support to those affected.
