GEORGE NEWS - The building site in Victoria Street where the Neo Victoria apartment block collapsed on 6 May was returned to the owner last week after the police and Department of Employment and Labour completed their investigation of the site.
Several investigations were launched, among others by the Western Cape Government, the police and the department.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said an inquest docket had been opened after the collapse. He said that the police had finished their investigation at the site itself.
"An inquest docket was opened at the time of the incident when the first victim was retrieved from the debris. This investigation is still underway. The investigation at the construction site was concluded.
"Evidence gathered at the site forms part of the ongoing police investigation. Meanwhile, all 34 deceased were formally identified and the last body was handed to the next of kin on Monday 10 June," said Spies.
No time frame could be given for completion of the investigation.
The provincial chief inspector for the Department of Employment and Labour, David Esau, said that there was no need to continue work at the site itself, and it had been handed over to the landowner.
