MOTORING NEWS AND VIDEO'S - Come rain or shine, Suidkus 4x4 are committed to the ride.
The Suidkus 4x4 community woke up to heavy rains on Sunday, 21 May 2023. Despite this, 18 vehicles arrived to drive with legend Hannes Grobler.
Rain was falling as the vehicles departed from Outeniqua Game Farm's restaurant and the warmth of coffee and shelter.
The route, which many have driven, was a lot more wet and slippery than before. Arthur Reyneke, from Suidkus 4x4, took the lead and plotted a route for the enthusiasts that would make it do-able for the inexperienced, but had the obstacles and fun for the more adventurous.
The farm covers 1 200 hectares, so there is a lot of exploring that can be done. The 18 vehicles took on some daring climbs and descents, with the Jimnys showing just what they are made of.
Taking a more scenic route, Hannes Grobler drove his brother's VW Amarok instead of the usual Nissan we have come to know and love to see him in.
The group made a stop next to the dam. The Jeeps showed their floating capabilities, as the dam was full from all the rain. Riaan van der Merwe had a little help from Jaco Roux in getting out, as there was no traction on the edge. Those who stood too close, nearly got soaked.
After this thrilling display of capabilities, it was on to the riverbed, where rocks and water are the main feature. Climbing out of the valley was just as daring, with the rain making dongas in the gravel road.
After a brief stop, discussing the thrills of the morning, enthusiasts went into the buffalo camp, where there was not buffalo, but some quicksand.
Arthur nearly got stuck himself, while watching everyone and not realising there was a muddy patch, but once again the Ford showed its capabilities and got unstuck all by himself. Riaan, this time, got a chance to return the favour Jaco gave him, by assisting Jaco out of the same muddy patch.
Then it was off to the forest, where the last obstacle of the day awaited. Going through the river was tricky, but Landcruisers met their match on the other side of it. The mud was slippery and if the momentum was lost, some assistance was needed.
After a thrilling day, the fires had been lit and the braai was waiting. Fellow Suidkus 4x4ers got to chat with Francois Jordaan about what made the legend.

The next trip is the Jan Se Gat challenge on 27 May for the more daring and then Heuning Klip 4x4 for a more scenic route, which has a play area for those who want to add some excitement.
