MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The police Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Mossel Bay has established a much-needed support group.
The Ukhanyo women's support group aims to provide support and counselling to women who have been raped or sexually assaulted.
"The words of Thembeka Mqamelo, 'I never received counselling after the court case', have stayed with me," says Zaida Swart from the unit.
"Therefore, together with Thembeka, we decided to start the support group."
Thembeka assisted victims at the Khayelitsha rape crisis centre in Cape Town and also at the Ubuntu Clinic.
She is a trained Lifeline HIV/AIDS counsellor.
The Ukanyo women's support group will meet on a monthly basis.
For more information, contact Swart (044 693 3869) during office hours
The FCS unit in Mossel Bay is under the command of Capt Geoffrey Gordon.
