MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Beat the winter blues with a musical trip around the world.
Visit exotic, tropical climes, wonder at the mysteries of the East and travel Europe from the security of your seat, all while being enthusiastically entertained by the Garden Route's premier musical performance group – Carpe Musicam! Orchestra and Choir.
Don't miss the concert in the Mossel Bay Town Hall at 15:30 on Sunday, 14 July.
Journey
The journey starts right here at the southern tip of Africa with a medley of popular South African songs.
Then it's off to South America and the Caribbean. After stops in Japan and India, we leave for Europe, where Russia, Italy, Austria and France are on the itinerary.
It should be noted here that all the musical items in this 80-minute performance are associated with the respective countries, and not necessarily the country's folk music or traditional music.
Two examples of this are Don't Cry For Me, Argentina and excerpts from Fiddler On The Roof. The first for alto saxophone, orchestra and choir – with sax solo by soulful saxophonist Ronell Kruger.
Violin
The other is a virtuosic violin solo medley of tunes from Fiddler on the Roof, ably performed by Sedgefield violinist Cherith Bain, at the very top of her game. Why Fiddler on the Roof? The show is set in Russia and the musical style is very much that of Russian Jewry.
The Caribbean is represented by an adaptation of Hans Zimmer's very own arrangement of a suite of Pirates of the Caribbean themes.
Rimsky-Korsakov's Song of India, with a definite Tommy Dorsey, feel will get you tapping your feet. Funiculi, Funicula will leave you gasping for air, and the suite from Les Misérables will touch your soul and inspire you.
Tickets
Tickets are priced at R150 for adults and R50 for under 18s. Tickets for Carpe Musicam! events are in great demand, so book online at: www.carpemusicam.co.za.
If you would rather purchase your ticket at the door, it is advisable to arrive early to secure a good seat.
Refreshments will be on sale for an hour before all concerts and the Carpe Musicam! Pops Band will entertain audience members for 30 minutes before the Mossel Bay concert.
