MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The three young people who died in a shack fire in Asla Park on Sunday, 26 May, have been identified.
According to a police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp, the victims were two males, Sipho (Oyama) Mgodlo (17) and Mawanda Mgodlo (19), and a woman Aphiwe Gcasamba (26).
Oyama is said to have been a talented soccer player. Africa City Football Club expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family of this "young star and promising soccer player".
Kapp said on Sunday that police had responded to a shack fire in the informal settlement, Gushindoda, Sixaxeni Street, at 03:50 that morning.
“On arrival, other emergency services including the fire brigade, were already on the scene. After the blaze was under control, three bodies were found under the burned rubble, said to be residents at the address.”
The KwaNonqaba Police have opened an inquest into the deaths. Warrant Officer Geoffrey Moos is the investigating officer (044 606 5631 or 044 606 5606).
