MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The four teenagers accused of attacking a Da Gamaskop police constable with an axe are set to head to trial next year.
The officer, who had been off duty at the time of the attack, had been walking down Dalindyebo Street in Albert Luthuli Park on 25 May last year when the teens allegedly attacked him with an axe and other sharp objects.
He sustained life-threatening injuries, which included an axe wound to his neck, and had to undergo emergency surgery to save his life. The officer had started working at the Da Gamaskop Police Station less than a month before the attempt on his life.
A team of Da Gamaskop detectives, Constable Jan Hendrik Els, Sergeant Sonja du Plessis, Warrant Officer Janette Yssel, Lieutenant Colonel Maria Gerber, Sergeant Elwynand Karelse and Constable Charmlin Hartnick, arrested the four teenagers, aged between 16 and 19, less than 24 hours after the ambush.
Du Plessis was made the investigating officer on the case.
The teens were all charged with attempted murder, and the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court released them on bail of R500 each.
The four appeared again on Tuesday 25 August, when their trial was set for 26 May - two years and one day after the brutal incident that almost ended the constable's life.
