GREAT BRAK RIVER NEWS - A 26-year-old police officer was found dead on Tuesday morning, 7 July, in the barracks at the Great Brak River Police Station.
Constable Marvin van der Vendt was a member at the KwaNonqaba Police Station at the time of his death and was originally from Friemersheim, according to the police spokesperson in Great Brak, Sergeant Laurianne Botha.
It is reported that a family member who spoke to Van der Vendt shortly before his death, was concerned over his emotional wellbeing and asked colleagues to check on him. Upon investigation, the body of Van der Vendt was found by the colleagues. He had hanged himself.
"Const Van der Vendt was a member of the KwaNonqaba Police family for six years.
"He was a capable police member and his death comes as a great shock to us," said KwaNonqaba Police spokesperson, Sgt Kappie Kapp.
Const Van der Vendt was described by other colleagues as a well-mannered young man, who will be sorely missed.
Station commander of the KwaNonqaba Police, Lieut-Col Asiza Sharon Mandongana, along with police chaplain Capt Bhana, supported colleagues of Van der Vendt at the station after they had received news of his passing.
