MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - Seals at the harbour in Mossel Bay have had the town talking because of the loud noise they make, which sounds like a cow lowing. Technically, it is correct to say a seal "barks".
The Mossel Bay Advertiser received three letters from members of the public about the noise which they hear, mainly at night or early in the morning.
The noise can be heard as far above the harbour as the suburb of Linkside, which stretches from the Van Riebeeck Stadium to below the Mossel Bay Golf Course.
VIDEO -The secret life of seals
Justin Human, the vessel manager at the company, Afro Fishing, based at the harbour, told the Advertiser this week: "The sound the seals makes is so loud, one gets a fright, especially if they are hiding under the jetty and one does not see them before hearing the noise."
Human produced two videos and a photograph of the seals. He would like to capture a video of the seals while they are barking, but has not been able to thus far.
He believes it is two large seals - almost two metres long - who make the noise. One is missing an eye.
"They can be seen at Quay One, just before sunrise, but mostly between the Vincent Jetty and Seavuna. They wait for fish offcuts that might fall into the water."
