MOSSEL BAY NEWSFLASH - An early morning break-in at a prestigious game lodge in the greater Mossel Bay area resulted in theft of 12 pieces of rhino horn to an estimated value of R1.3 million.
A director of the game lodge confirmed the theft and said the horns originated from rhino who died of natural causes on the reserve. “Thankfully no-one was hurt in the incident.”
Police said the break-in occurred very early on Monday morning, 12 March.
Representatives of Nature Conservation confirmed that the horns were well documented and that the necessary DNA-samples from the horn are duly stored.
This makes it unlikely that the horn can be traded in South Africa.
The investigation is ongoing.
