MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Residents who provide information that leads to the successful prevention of, or prosecution for, corruption, fraud, damage and theft of municipal infrastructure, now stand the chance to be rewarded.
But this is only if your information leads to successful prosecution or the prevention of a loss for Mossel Bay Municipality.
The municipality is mandated to fight unlawful and irregular conduct, fraud, theft and corruption. Therefore, a need was identified for a policy enabling the municipality to reward members of the public for their assistance in combatting these crimes.
Created, approved
The policy was created and approved by council at the last monthly open council meeting of 2023, on 30 November.
Following this approval, the policy was sent to National Treasury to ensure there are no objections to it. National Treasury confirmed in its letter, dated 11 December 2023, that it is the municipal council's prerogative to approve and implement the policy.
In terms of the policy, reward payment will be at the discretion of the municipality and assessed on a case-by-case basis.
The policy provides a guideline for the determination of the reward, payable to a maximum of R5 000 per matter.
"It is trusted that this policy, allowing for a reward to be paid to an informant, will encourage members of the public to report corruption, fraud, damages, and theft of municipal infrastructure."
An informant's identity would be protected, assured the municipality.
At the first monthly open council meeting of 2024, held on 29 February, cognisance was taken of the feedback from National Treasury, enabling further implementation of the policy.
