Coreen died of cancer on 6 March 1999, having done so much for Mossel Bay. Among her accomplishments, she was prominent in the Voortrekker movement, until illness forced her to stop. She was Chairperson of Jong Dames Dinamiek, wrote the column "Uit de Goede Oude Tijd", and was voted Citizen of the Year of Mossel Bay in 1997.
There was a turnout of 236 participants on a clear day that was probably a bit warm for walking. However, the views were magnificent as compensation.
The seabird theme with the oystercatcher – the bird painted on rocks to guide hikers along the trail - was continued on the medal. The medal carries the names of three ladies from Holy Cross Primary in George, who were affected by cancer, but were inspirational in their attitude.
Linda Galvin succumbed, but was a positive inspiration in the face of adversity. Alison Upson is now near the five-year "all-clear" mark, and Rachel Thomas is in Grade 4, playing netball and flourishing after a bone marrow transplant. Looking at her, you wouldn't think she had lost all her hair.
Finishers had the option of this medal or one of the previous 12 designs.
The trail continues to be upgraded; this year participants saw signboards indicating the path when it might be confusing.
The walk - some run the distance as marathon/cross-country training – along the trail, highlights the most magnificent scenery in the Mossel Bay area. All proceeds go to the Cancer Association of South Africa. This time, R5 400 was raised.
The organisers thank all participants who made this possible. "Also, we'd like to thank Hartenbos Drawwers for their support in arranging the event. They organise and run the water point, as well as helping us with equipment and assisting at the start."
The next event will be Thursday, 26 December, 2013, starting at Bat's Cove from 06:30 – 08:00, but those who would like a medal before this, can contact Skalla on his cell 082 771 5562. If you do the 5km distance (2.5km out and back on the trail), he will provide a medal in exchange for R20 donation to Cansa.
Some of the participants seen here with Grade 4 learner, Rachel Thomas (in die middle with pink polka dot pants) who's name is also on one of the medals.
