Several of the speakers mentioned the dire conditions prevalent at this police station, and lauded the police officers for their motivated service to their community despite the challenges they face as a result of inadequate facilities.
The chair of the KwaNonqaba Community Policing Forum, Edgar Ntebe, said the service excellence awards were due recognition for members who were inspired by strong, visionary leaders.
He rued the fact that the station had to bid farewell to both the erstwhile station commander, Colonel Johann Braaf, who was promoted and transferred to Beaufort West, and Captain TC le Roux, the head of administration, who was transferred to the Mossel Bay Police Station.
When Capt Le Roux was head of administration, she inspired and assisted the CPF to reach the second best spot in the Western Cape, Ntebe said.
The keynote speaker, Cathy McDonald, said the police members are the rampart, the defensive wall between the community and marauding criminals. "Your hearts, your dedication and willingness to serve your community against all odds, are the cement that holds up this wall, are what makes all the difference."
She reminded the police of their important role in bringing criminals to book. "Only twice have I managed to get perpetrators off the hook in court; both were when the police members did not take extra care when dealing with the cases. When the members were thorough in their investigations, no manner of trying benefited any of the criminals I ever represented," McDonald said.
Colonel Una Saayman, representing the Da Gamaskop Cluster, reminded the KwaNonqaba police members of the invaluable asset they are to the police service as a whole.
