MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality has issued an urgent warning for locals to block and ignore messages on WhatsApp claiming one's municipal account is in arrears and disconnection is imminent.
The municipality stated on its Facebook page that "fraudsters are contacting members of the public via WhatsApp, falsely stating that immediate payment is required to avoid disconnection or legal action,".
"This is a scam. Please block the number immediately and ignore the message. The municipality does not request payments via WhatsApp or unofficial email addresses," it said.
It added that all legitimate communication will come only from official Mossel Bay Municipality channels.
It requests that residents and businesses who receive a suspicious message or call report it immediately to 044 606 5000 or email admin@mosselbay.gov.za.
"Payments to the municipality are accepted only through official methods – at municipal pay points (municipal offices) or via electronic banking platforms," it said.
