UPDATE: Meiringspoort remains closed for now but it is expected to reopen at 16:00 today, Wednesday 25 March. Motorists are kindly requested to make use of alternative routes until the road has been safely reopened.

GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - Motorists are advised that Meiringspoort has been temporarily closed following heavy rains and thunderstorms that swept through the area last night.

The downpour caused rocks, mud, and debris to wash onto the roadway, creating unsafe driving conditions through the poort. 

Authorities have since closed the route while clean-up operations are underway. The pass will be reopened once it has been declared safe for travel.

Motorists are urged to make use of alternative routes in the meantime.
