MOSSEL BAY NEWS - At the auspicious opening in the Town Hall on Thursday of the four-day Dias & Port Festival, Mossel Bay executive mayor Alderman Harry Levendal welcomed the representatives of the various countries contributing to the annual celebration which is themed, Where Cultures Meet.
He welcomed guests which included the Western Cape premier and her cabinet as well as diplomatic representatives of the participating foreign countries such as Indonesia, Germany, Madagascar, India, France, and Portugal.
"On behalf of council and the community of the greater Mossel Bay area, I thank you all and our partners and sponsors for your contributions. Without you, this festival would not be the success we anticipate it to be this year, nor what it has been in the past."
Alderman Levendal said this festival was truly the place where cultures met, and the performing artists from the various countries contributed greatly to the uniqueness of the festival that guests and visitors would experience.
For the official opening, the Mossel Bay Creative Cultures Association (MOCCA) involved musicians, singers - both soloists and choirs, dancers, local poets, and writers as well as actors on one stage in a most impressive programme.
Of the most moving moments was the mass choir's rendition of the national anthem. The concert also included an international component, featuring dance groups from Indonesia and Madagascar, as well as the Kanimanbo Portuguese band and German performers.
"Your attendance and participation in the festival programme provide an opportunity for all members of our community as well as our visitors to enjoy top national and international performances free of charge.
"May you experience the warmth and hospitality of our town, and all of its people," the mayor said.
