MOSSEL BAY NEWS - On 15 March, members of the Mossel Bay Community-Based Disabled Group took part in the Outeniqua Chair Challenge (OCC) in George.
They were led by the director of the group, Patrick Saayman.
It was the 21st time they competed in the challenge.
There were 17 of the group who took part.
Shadrack Maywabe took part in the 10 kilometre race and won a gold medal, while the other competitors took part in the 5km challenge and all won bronze medals.
The 21st OCC was a huge success, with about 600 athletes participating.
The event, which was nearly cancelled for lack of funds, was revitalised by a R250 000 sponsorship from the Garden Route Mall in George.
The OCC is renowned for attracting top-tier talent. Local, regional and national athletes in the race were joined by athletes from Ghana, Namibia and Botswana.
The competitors were assisted by family members. Patrick Saayman is on the left.
