MOSSEL BAY NEWS - As of 08:00 today, Friday 16 March, the 2018 Buffalo Rally is a reality.
The Nomads Motorcycle Club chairman, Luderick Jacoby, says bikers from far and wide are expected to congregate at the De Bakke Santos campsite, where yet again a full programme of fun events and incredible cash prizes await them.
As usual, local residents are welcome to attend at a fee, payable at the gate.
Mass ride
The highlight for the event is the mass parade of thousands of bikers following a circle route through town, around the Point, going to KwaNonqaba before they head back again to the De Bakke Santos Resort. Mossel Bay's executive mayor, Alderman Harry Levendal, and the municipal manager Advocate Thys Giliomee will join in the fun ride which will depart promptly at 11:00 from the De Bakke Santos resort.
Members of the Nomads Motorcycle Club and especially the organising committee were welcomed on Tuesday afternoon when Alderman Levendal, Advocate Giliomee and the executive manager in the municipal manager's office, Colin Puren, paid them a visit.
Lending a hand - and a very special motorcycle to the mayor for the occasion - was the owner of SignWorx, Jacques Mostert, an avid local biker and owner of the 1941 WW2 CJ750 sidecar motorcycle and his girlfriend, Almarine du Plessis.
Speaking to the organisers in their joint operations centre in one of the De Bakke chalets, it is evident that arranging an event of this magnitude is a huge responsibility.
However, years of being at the helm of one of South Africa's largest and most popular motorcycle rallies proves that experience pays off.
Everything runs like clockwork with team members diligently going about their tasks.
Signs are put up so that bikers may know where to go, constant telephone calls and emails ensure that boxes on the check lists are ticked. In between, the laughs and jokes are a clear indication that even the organisers can have fun at the Buff.
Skills and stunts
The organisers invite locals to join in the free fun staged at the Garden Route Casino, where the Le Riche brothers, Brent and Bruce, will again impress with their skills and stunts on Saturday at 12:00.
There will be many free promotional giveaways. Also, visit the showcase of shiny motorcycles at the Show and Shine.
Bikes will arrive at the Garden Route Casino's main parking area on Saturday at 11:00 for a public exhibition, allowing guests to admire these extreme machines and interact with the owners.
Many a biker will, however, congregate in the main tent for most of the weekend, where live shows will keep them entertained throughout. It is here where the grand cash prize of R135 000 will be awarded to one lucky entrant on Saturday evening.
